Covid-19 Testing Now Available at San Jose Airport

Travelers who must present negative covid-19 tests to enter the destination countries may take these tests at the Juan Santamaría Airport.  Aeris Holding, manager of the terminal, reported that starting this Friday, May 14, a rapid test laboratory will be for passengers needing Covid-19 testing.

This space will be installed 600 meters from the international terminal. Results will be given one hour after the test is done.  “With this new covid-19 detection test laboratory service, we are at the forefront of the main air terminals in the world, because the priority in travel facilitation is to preserve health and mitigate the possibility of contagion, always thinking about the well-being of passengers to and from the different destinations ”, stated Rafael Mencía, Aeris executive director.  The tests will be carried out by professionals from Laboratorio Echandi and the service will be operated by Morpho Travel Retail.  According to information from Aeris, international passengers who require it will have the possibility of being served in English.

How will the laboratory work?  The test area is located in a kind of awning installed 600 meters northwest of the air terminal, on the road to San Antonio del Tejar.  In this way, it is intended not to affect the flow of passengers in the airport facilities, and also that the samples can be properly handled.

The process of taking the sample and delivering the result is a maximum of one hour.  The recommendation is that travelers arrive at the laboratory at least four hours before flight departure.  To carry out the test, they must present an air ticket and passport.  The antigen test costs $ 65 (plus sales tax) and the result is delivered electronically, or in print.  The space has an area for lines, a waiting room for results and an isolation area for positive cases. The rapid antigen test is recognized to enter the United States and required in the Netherlands, both destinations with direct connection from Juan Santamaría International Airport.

Massimo Manzi, Executive Director of the Costa Rican Chamber of Health, highlighted that with this opening the air terminal joins a network of more than 100 laboratories throughout the country where PCR and antigen tests are carried out, thus facilitating access safe, efficient and affordable.
