Same Sex Marriage Now Legal in Costa Rica

Jaco and the Central Pacific region has always been a popular wedding destination, but now we could be seeing that market grow even more.  Costa Rica became the latest country to legalize same-sex marriage Tuesday when a ruling from its supreme court went into effect ending the country’s ban.  Many couples wasted no time with private ceremonies thoughout the country. A lesbian couple became the first to tie the knot in a ceremony that took place just after the new law came into effect at midnight.
The wedding was shown on national TV.  President Carlos Alvarado said the law change meant Costa Rica now recognised the rights lesbian and gay people had always deserved.  He tweeted (in Spanish) that “empathy and love should from now on be the guiding principles which will allow us to move forward and build a country where there is room for everyone”.

Costa Rica is the first in Central America to legalize same-sex marriage, which should be an excellent boost for Jaco tourism, as the area has some of the most popular Costa Rica wedding destinations in the area like Villa Caletas and the Los Suenos Resort.
